Nepal listed among top tourist destinations |
Nepal has been listed among top countries, according to a new Lonely Planet travel guide for the top places to go to in 2010. Lonely Planet's "Best in Travel 2010" released on Monday lists Nepal along with El Salvador, Greece, Germany, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal, Suriname and the United States as the best places to go and best things to do in the year ahead. "This is a collection of destinations and experiences that we rate as the stuff people really should consider for next year. Whatever your own style dictates, you should be able to find inspiration in these destinations," Reuters reported Asia-Pacific communications manager Adam Bennett as saying. [NOV 03 2009] |

Visitor Arrivals by air continues to grow |
The figures released by Immigration Office, Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) reveal that visitor arrivals in the month of August 2009, compared to the same month last year, have increased by 5% to 27,676.
In August this year, there has been a robust growth of 87% in tourist arrivals from China. Similarly, the arrivals from Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand have also increased by 27%, 44%, 21% and 9% respectively. The Asian markets to decline in this month were Malaysia (13%) and Chinese Taipei (21%). In aggregate the Asian segment has registered a positive growth of 26%.
In the SAARC region, arrivals from Bangladesh and Pakistan have witnessed positive growth of 23% and 22% respectively. However the arrivals from India have decreased by 10% compared to the same month last year. Sri Lanka also witnessed a negative growth of 1% this month.
An overall positive growth of 11% has been observed from the European markets with arrivals from France up by 9% , Germany by 34%, The Netherlands by 20%, Spain by 9% and Denmark by 50%. The only market to decline in this month was the UK by 24%.
Tourist arrivals from New Zealand and Canada have also registered robust growth of 22% and 88% respectively. The arrivals from United States of America remained stable whereas the Australian market declined by 4 % compared to the same month last year.
This is the third consecutive month Nepal has witnessed positive growth in the international tourist arrivals. Recovery in the arrivals to Nepal in the beginning of second half of 2009 is in line with the marginal improvement observed in some of the economies. Moreover, it also reflects the rebounding confidence of the international tour operators and the resilient nature of tourism economy.
A total of 33,685 foreign tourists departed from TIA in August 2009 up by 20% compared to the same month last year. The number of Nepalese arrivals stood at 46,852 while 51,653 Nepalese departed from TIA in August 2009. [Sep 01, 2009] |

Nepalese Food festival held in Sri Lanka |
The Embassy of Nepal in Sri Lanka, in association with Nepal Tourism Board, organized a "Nepalese Food Promotion" festival at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo from 02 to 12 July 2009. This is the first-of-its-kind program organized to promote Nepal in Sri Lanka.
The 11-day fete was attended by over 1000 guests, including nearly 200 special guests of the Embassy drawn from among leaders of business community, tourism professionals, social and political personalities and senior government officials of Sri Lanka as well as ambassadors, high commissioners and other senior diplomats based in Colombo.
Hon. Hussain Bhaila, Deputy Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka; Dr. A T Ariyaratne, Founder President of Sarvodaya Shramadana Movement; Mr. Nihal Rodrigo, former Secretary General of SAARC, and many other eminent friends of Nepal in Sri Lanka attended the event as distinguished guests.
Welcoming the prominent guests on various days of the fete, His Excellency Durga Prasad Bhattarai, Ambassador of Nepal to Sri Lanka, shed light on various aspects of food habits and food items as well as music and crafts of Nepal, and expressed the confidence that the event would help bring Sri Lankan people closer to Nepal, and fuel their interest to visit Nepal several times in future.
Chefs Yuba Raj Pokhrel and Shyam Krishna Nagarkoti of Hotel Soaltee Crowne Plaza, Kathmandu, entertained the guests with a wide range of authentic Nepali cuisine for dinner from 7.00 PM to 11.00 PM everyday during the period. The Chefs were nominated and supported for the purpose by the Hotel Association Nepal and Nepal Tourism Board respectively.
The guests were also entertained with Nepali folk songs and music by a group of artistes led by popular singer Bom Bahadur Karki of Radio Nepal, at the invitation of the Embassy. The team's musicians Krishna Bahadur Gandharba (Sarangi), Chitra Kumar Magar (Bansuri) and Udi Ram Khadka (Madal) added a distinct Nepali tone to the event and remained a good part of attraction throughout.
A continuous multimedia presentation on Nepal and a permanent display of the 'Nepal Tourism Year 2011' banner and other promotional materials supplied by Nepal Tourism Board and Nepal Trade and Export Promotion Centre, enhanced the festival. [July 17, 2009] |

Saad Naseer (USA) - The Last Member of Peak Freaks Everest Expedition Arrives in Nepal |
Saad Naseer from Chicago, USA, a member of the Peak Freaks Everest Expedition group arrived in Kathmandu yesterday. He took a flight to Lukla this morning at 7:15 a.m. From Lukla he trekked to Jorsale, and reached the place at 11a.m.
He is the last team member to arrive in Nepal. Saad's mission is to set a record for the rapid Everest ascent. His goal is to climb officially from the Base Camp on May 10- make it to the summit and reach the base camp by May 27- a rapid ascent of 17 days & 30 days from Kathmandu - the summit - and back to Kathmandu.
He has spent the past five weeks sleeping in a High Altitude sleeping chamber designed by a Canadian based company named Altitude Tech. According to the company, sleeping in the tent will change Saad's oxygen saturation slowly in his blood stream helping him to acclimatize well before he even arrives at the mountain. If this proves to be true, it may be that climbers won't need to take so much time away to attain the acclimatization needed to climb Everest. [April 28, 2008] |

Good Tidings for Mountaineers - Nepal Govt. Reduces Mountaineering Permit Fees |
The Government of Nepal has announced heavy reductions on all the Mountaineering Peak Permit Fees for the permitted Himalayan peaks in Nepal. The revisions reflect a reduction of 50 % during the autumn season, and 75% for the summer and winter seasons including Mt. Everest effective from 16 July 2008. Nepal Government has also announced waiver of permit fees for five years from 16 July 2008 for all peaks in Mid-West and Far West Nepal. This is great piece of news for all mountaineers and climbers, because now they have access to some of the greatest mountains at a nominal permit fee. [May 2, 2008] |
