MOUNT EVEREST - a Breaf Introduction / Everest Base Camp - Treks / Sagarmatha National Park

Mount Everest - also called Sagarmatha, is the highest mountain on Earth, and the highest point on the Earth's crust, as measured by the height above sea level of its summit, 8,848 metres ( 29,029 ft). The mountain, which is part of the Himalaya range in Asia, is located on the border between Sagarmatha Zone - Nepal and Tibet - China. Sagarmatha Zone is a zone in eastern Nepal. This zone includes mountain districts of the Himalayas (including Mount Everest) in the north, hill districts in the center, and valley districts of the Terai in the south. The borders of this zone are China to the north, India to the south, the Koshi Zone of Nepal to the east and the Janakpur Zone of Nepal to the west. Tibet is a plateau region in Asia, north of the Himalayas. It is home to the indigenous Tibetan people, and to some other ethnic groups such as Monpas and Lhobas, and is now also inhabited by considerable numbers of Han Chinese people. Tibet is the highest region on earth, with an average elevation of 4,900 metres (16,000 ft). It is sometimes referred to as the roof of the world. The highest mountain in the world attracts climbers of all levels, from well experienced mountaineers to novice climbers willing to pay substantial sums to professional mountain guides to complete a successful climb. Climbers are a significant source of tourist revenue for Nepal, whose government also requires all prospective climbers to obtain an expensive permit, costing up to US$25,000 per person.

Everest Base Camp

There are two base camps on opposite sides of Mt. Everest: to the South in Nepal, and to the North in Tibet. Located at 5,208 metres (17,090 ft) is the North Base Camp in Tibet and at the altitude of 5,360 metres (17,600 ft) is South Base Camp in Nepal. South Base Camp is used when climbing via the southeast ridge, while North Base Camp is used when climbing via the northeast ridge. Supplies are carried to the camps by sherpas or porters, and with help of animals. The North Base Camp has vehicle access (at least in the summer months). Climbers typically rest at base camp for several days for acclimatization; to reduce the risks and severity of altitude sickness. Base camps usually consist of long lines of tents with food, blankets, and light.

Everest Base Camp Trek

The trek to Everest Base Camp on the Nepal side is one of the most popular trekking routes in the Himalayas and is done by thousands of trekkers each year. The Everest Base Camp Trek is arguably the most famous trekking way in the world and this is a once in a lifetime chance to see some of the most breathtaking view imaginable. Nepal is a fascinating country and the trek gives an insight into the lives and culture of the Sherpa people. Our ascent is steady and well paced to best suit the acclimatization needed. Sunrise on the snow capped peaks above the Khumbu Glacier is an unforgettable sight from the summit of Kala Pattar. This trek is one for the lover of high places and those wanting to push themselves to the limit. It is a tough challenge and not to be taken lightly with generally well graded paths but some tougher sections along the Khumbu glacier.

As of 2002, a visit to the North (Tibet-side) Base Camp required a permit from the Chinese government, above and beyond the permit required to visit Tibet itself. At this time such permits could be arranged relatively easily via travel companies in Lhasa, typically as part of a travel package that included hiring a vehicle, driver, and translator. Road access to the North Base Camp may be obtained from a road branching to the South from the Friendship Highway. For Everest Base Camp Lhasa Tour, Start your journey to Tibet with a spectacular flight over the snow capped Himalayan mountains Mt. Kanchenjunga (8586m/ 28,169ft), Mt. Everest (8848m/ 29.028ft), Mt. Makalu (8463m/ 27,766ft) and others. You visit the Potala the monumental palace of Kings and Dalai Lamas, with its numerous chapels. The view of the holy city from the roofs is unforgettable.

Excursion to the Sera and Drepung monasteries which were amidst the largest monastic institutions in the world. The Chorten tombs of three Dalai Lamas are sited at Drepung. Sera is one of the best-preserved monasteries in Tibet. Drive past the beautiful Turquoise lake on the way to the historic town of Gyantse with its unique multi-storied Kumbum Stupa. At Shigatse walk through the massive Tashilungpo monastery and visit the memorial 'Chorten' of the late Panchen Lama. At the high plains of Old Tingri meet up with the trek crew and start trekking to North Everest Base Camp. The trek will take you up the historic expedition route from Old Tingri to Rongbuk Monastery crossing the Langma La pass (16,900 ft). Later hike up to the North Everest Base Camp and explore the Rongbuk glacier set directly below the massive north-face of Mount Everest. After gazing at the world's highest mountain scenery from Rongbuk drive by way of the amazing.

Sagarmatha National Park

Sagarmatha National Park, is located in eastern Nepal, containing parts of the Himalayas and the southern half of Mount Everest. The park was created July 19, 1976 and in 1979 was inscribed as a Natural World Heritage Site. Sagarmatha is a Sanskrit word, from sagar = "sky" (not to be confused with "sea/ocean") and matha = "forehead" or "head", and is the modern Nepali name for Mount Everest. The park encompasses an area of 1,148 km² and ranges in elevation from its lowest point of 2,845 m (9,335 ft) at Jorsalle to 8,850 m (29,035 ft) at the summit of Everest. Barren land above 5,000 m (16,400 ft) comprises 69% of the park while 28% is grazing land and the remaining 3% is forested. Most of the park area is very rugged and steep, with its terrain cut by deep rivers and glaciers. Unlike other parks, this park can be divided into four climate zones because of the rising altitude. The climatic zones include a forested lower zone, a zone of alpine scrub, the upper alpine zone which includes upper limit of vegetation growth, and the Arctic zone where no plants can grow. The types of plants and animals that are found in the park depend on the altitude. The park contains the upper watershed of the Dudh Kosi river basin system.
